Bulk cargo transport in Kenya
FleetGrid Africa coordinates the movement of bulk and loose cargo across Kenya. We source the right vehicle type from vetted transport partners, plan the route, track the movement and return clean delivery documentation to your finance and operations teams.
What bulk cargo transport involves in Kenya
Bulk cargo is anything that moves loose rather than in individual packaged units — cement and clinker, grain and cereals, fertiliser, mineral ore, aggregates, sand, coal, sugar and animal feed among them. It is priced by tonnage, it is sensitive to loading and weighbridge discipline, and it is unforgiving of delays because a plant, a mill or a construction site is usually waiting at the other end.
Moving it well is less about finding a truck and more about matching cargo characteristics to the correct vehicle, loading point capability and route. A commodity that can travel open on a tipper is handled very differently to one that must be sheeted, sealed or moved in a pneumatic bulker. FleetGrid Africa works through that matching before a vehicle is committed, so the truck that arrives at your loading bay is the truck the cargo actually needs.
We are a transport coordination company. We do not claim ownership of the vehicles that move your cargo — we build and manage a vetted partner network, allocate the right partner to each load, and stay accountable for the movement from allocation to proof of delivery.
- Dry bulk commodities including cement, clinker, grain, fertiliser and aggregates
- Bagged bulk consignments moved on curtain-siders, flatbeds and closed bodies
- Tipper and side-tipper movements for aggregates, sand, ballast and mineral cargo
- Full truckload consignments from a single loading point to a single destination
How we select vehicles and transport partners
Every partner in the FleetGrid network goes through a documentation and compliance check before they carry a load. We verify company registration, vehicle ownership or lease documentation, insurance validity, driver licensing and, where the cargo requires it, cargo-specific handling experience. Partners that fail to maintain those standards stop receiving allocations.
Vehicle selection is driven by the cargo brief you give us: commodity, tonnage, loading method, whether tipping is possible at destination, sheeting requirements and any site restrictions such as axle limits or turning space. For a single 28-tonne consignment of bagged cargo we will look for a suitable rigid or articulated unit; for a continuous aggregate haul we will look for tipper capacity that can cycle reliably on that route.
Where a movement is repeated week after week, we work towards a dedicated allocation so the same partners and drivers become familiar with your site, your loading procedure and your paperwork. Familiarity is what turns an acceptable haul into a predictable one.
Routes, weighbridges and load compliance
Kenyan bulk movements live or die on axle-load compliance. Overloading exposes the consignment to weighbridge detention, fines and offloading, and it is one of the most common causes of an otherwise well-planned haul arriving late. We plan tonnage against the legal axle configuration of the allocated vehicle rather than against the maximum the body can physically hold.
On the main corridors — Mombasa to Nairobi, Nairobi to Nakuru, Eldoret and Kisumu, and the feeder routes into the Rift Valley, Coast and Western regions — we plan around known weighbridge locations, urban access restrictions and night-travel considerations. On rural and quarry access routes we confirm road surface and turning conditions with the partner before allocation.
Each movement carries a documented plan: loading window, expected transit time, planned stops and the contact point at both ends. When something changes on the road, the plan is updated and the client is told, rather than the client discovering it when the truck fails to arrive.
Visibility and documentation on every consignment
You receive movement updates from dispatch through to offloading, including confirmation of loading, in-transit position updates and delivery confirmation. Tracking and notification links can be shared with your own site teams and, where appropriate, with your customer.
On completion we return the delivery documentation your finance team needs: signed delivery notes, weighbridge tickets where they apply, and a clean record of tonnage loaded against tonnage delivered. That record is what makes reconciliation and claims straightforward rather than a phone-call exercise weeks later.

Cargo and vehicle matching
We translate your commodity, tonnage and offloading method into the correct vehicle configuration before any allocation is made.
Vetted partner allocation
Capacity is drawn from transport partners whose registration, insurance and vehicle documentation have been checked.
Axle-load planning
Loads are planned against legal axle limits for the allocated configuration to avoid weighbridge detention.
Route and access planning
Corridor, feeder-road and site-access conditions are confirmed with the partner ahead of dispatch.
Movement tracking
Position and milestone updates from loading through to offloading, shareable with your teams.
Delivery documentation
Signed delivery notes and weighbridge records returned as a clean, reconcilable pack.
Exception handling
Breakdowns, weighbridge issues or site delays are escalated with a named contact and a recovery plan.
Repeat lane management
Recurring hauls move towards dedicated partner allocation for consistency and faster cycle times.
Consolidated communication
One coordination desk instead of a chain of individual transporter phone calls.

Common questions about bulk cargo transport
What tonnage can you coordinate?
We handle single full-truckload consignments as well as continuous programmes made up of many loads. Tell us the total tonnage and the window, and we will plan the number of vehicles and cycles required.
Do you own the trucks?
No. FleetGrid Africa coordinates transport through a network of vetted transport partners. We take responsibility for allocation, planning, tracking and documentation on every movement we handle.
Which commodities do you move?
Dry bulk and bagged commodities including cement, clinker, grain, fertiliser, aggregates, coal, limestone and animal feed. If your commodity needs special handling, tell us in the brief so we can match the correct equipment.
How is pricing determined?
Rates depend on commodity, tonnage, distance, road conditions, loading and offloading time, and whether the lane is a one-off or a recurring programme. We quote each brief individually rather than publishing generic rate cards.
Can you handle loading at quarries and plants?
Yes. We confirm site access, turning space, axle restrictions and loading equipment with the transport partner before allocation so the vehicle that arrives can actually be loaded.
What happens if a truck breaks down?
The movement is escalated to our coordination desk, you are informed, and we work with the partner network to arrange recovery or replacement capacity as quickly as the route allows.
